LOUIS VUITTON NEW YORK

NEW YORK, U.S.A

COMMERCIAL

is the design of an exterior finish. Louis Vuitton’s checkered pattern and the grid of that pattern were maintained in the inner layer of laminated glass and on the interior side of the glass respectively. However, a checkered pattern with gradations in the transmission of light ranging from opacity to transparency, produced through changes in the dimensions of squares, was overlaid on that pattern. From outside, the building as a whole is slightly opaque, but scenes of the interior can be glimpsed in rectangles with blurred edges. The exterior finish was applied to a corner of the New York Trust Company Building, a 1930 work designed by Cross & Cross. The present design is an attempt to realize, after 70 years, the spirit of the drawings by Hugh Ferriss, especially his vision of a New York skyscraper as a crystalline cluster.
