MITSUBISHI MOTORS TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2003

TOKYO, JAPAN

EXHIBITION

is the design of a stand measuring 38.5 meters by 47.5 meters for Mitsubishi Motors at the Tokyo Motor Show. It is basically a lighting grid designed for the automobiles on display–a cloudlike ceiling of interconnected rings, large and small. It does not block out the ceiling of the exhibition center but gives that corner of the center a distinctive atmosphere. The rings are made from transparent acrylic panels, 10 millimeters thick, inserted between aluminum tubes, 30 millimeters square in cross-section, arranged vertically in horizontal rows 60 millimeters apart. The 60-millimeter gap allows the tubes to intersect at the joints. At a joint, basically three rings intersect. The acrylic panels serve as beams in the perpendicular direction, and the aluminum tubes are used to integrate the panels structurally and to control their horizontal displacement.
